This is a brief description of the
Symphonic Band
Symphonic Band
Members of the intermediate band, the symphonic band, will not be
required to be in marching band. They will be required to attend all
symphonic band rehearsals and performances. Any student from the symphonic
band that is accepted as a member of the marching band is committed to
membership for the entire school year.
The symphonic band is not intended to be a second-rate ensemble, but rather
a separate high-quality performing group at a grade IV level. Many students
need to be placed at this level in order to complete training that may not
have been mastered in previous years.
There are several major benefits to the students that participate in the
symphonic band that both the parent and student should be aware of. Many
students will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills that would
be unavailable to them if all of the students were in the same class. They
will be challenged with first chair music rather than take a secondary role
in a larger advanced group. This is particularly beneficial to the
underclassmen.
It is most important that students do not quit band due to being selected
for the symphonic band as opposed to the wind ensemble. I understand that
there will be some growing pains in dealing with the disappointment of not
making the top band. Students should be encouraged to participate at the
level they are best able to handle. We need to have talented members in both
groups in order for the system to work properly.
